Mercedes’ Zero Emission, Invisible Car

Unbelievable!  Amazing!  You’ve got to see it to believe it!  Well, you can’t.  At least not when they turn on the camera and the LED system.

Mercedes new F-Cell vehicle is being marketed as a car that’s “virtually invisible to the environment.” That’s because the hydrogen fuel cell electric car, which converts compressed hydrogen into electricity to drive the motor, has only one emission: water vapor.

To promote the car’s invisibility, Mercedes equipped one side of the car with sheets of LEDs that show streaming images captured by a Canon 5D Mark II camera attached to the other side of the car.  It’s an interesting way to highlight technology that’s more military than grocery-getter but it’s turning heads none the less. With this technology, the car blends into the background, making it nearly invisible.

The car should be going into production in 2014, and although “invisible” won’t be one of the color choices, its 240-mile range should still appeal to folks.

Should I Buy From A Dealer Or Privately?

Buying a used car from a dealer or buying it privately, which is the best?

Both have their pros and cons and these should be weighed up against the other before any decision is made.

Firstly, going with a dealer you will have a wider choice over the cars on offer, certainly more than you would by going privately.

When buying from a dealer the car will have been cleaned and any faults will have been corrected and it will come with some sort of warranty. When purchasing privately you will be liable to fix any corrections and have to valet the vehicle yourself, plus you will have no comeback if something serious goes wrong within the first year.

Going with a dealer gives you plenty of time to check the car over in perfect lighting conditions; however you might feel rushed or pressured when looking a car over privately.

A dealer usually wonít mind at all if you wish to bring in your own expert to look over the car as they will have nothing to hide. However when going privately it could be harder for you to get an expert to look over the car with you.

Dealers also can offer finance — often with high interest charges ñ but this still gives you the option of finance which may be beneficial to you. With a private seller, you will need to pay the money in full.

The downside to buying from a car dealer is that the car could cost you more than by buying privately. Also, you wonít be able to interrogate the owner of the car through a dealer however when buying privately you have the opportunity to do so.

It really is all a matter of which you prefer as there are good and bad points either way, but the above tips will hopefully give you a better idea of which way to go when looking for your used car.

Seven Defensive Driving Techniques That Could Save Your Life!

Defensive Driving Safety - fyiAutoConsider yourself a safe driver? No need to take defensive driving classes right? If you’ve never had a traffic accident, you probably are a reasonably safe driver. However, traffic accidents are becoming more common every day, and are often not the fault of the victims who are badly injured. By learning some basic defensive driving techniques, you can greatly improve your chances of remaining injury-free and safe on the road.

There are many options for learning defensive driving techniques. Most driving schools offer classes in defensive driving, as do many advanced driving programs and online traffic safety courses.

Defensive driver education has come about after thorough research by experts into what commonly causes serious road accidents. Exhaustive analysis into this research has then gone on to produce the learning materials used to teach defensive driving tactics. Research now shows that drivers who adopt defensive driving as standard practice when traveling on the roads have a statistically better chance of avoiding serious injury.

Seven Of The Best Defensive Driving Techniques

1. Always anticipate danger and watch the road ahead. Drivers who adopt good defensive driving techniques always watch ahead for in case early braking or evasive action is needed. Leave a good gap between your vehicle and those ahead, allowing plenty of time brake early. Carefully scan ahead for others entering a freeway or driving through an intersection. Even when you have the green light, it is wise to look for other drivers who may be trying to run a red light.

2. Wear a seat belt. Statistics have long shown that wearing a seat belt greatly improves your chance of surviving an accident. In recent times, many countries have incorporated driving without a seat belt into their traffic violations, and it is therefore illegal to drive without a seat belt.

3. Avoid internal distractions. This includes talking on the telephone, changing the CD player or flicking between radio stations. Making sure your mirrors are set before driving is vital for a clear view in both directions, as well as avoiding the distraction of adjusting them whilst driving. It is standard when driving safely to avoid any distracting activity at all which might take your attention away from the driving job at hand.

4. Take extreme care in heavy traffic. Experts on defensive driving techniques suggest extreme risk exists when drivers find themselves in a large pack of cars. One oblivious move by any car in the pack has the potential to affect everyone else. The best course of action for accident avoidance is to safely navigate towards the front and away from the pack of cars.

5. Keep away from heavy vehicles. Keep a watchful eye out for heavy vehicles in your rear view mirror, and avoid driving in front of or beside them. Particular watch for and avoid heavy loads which donít look secure, particularly when cornering or rounding bends.

6. Keep both hands on the wheel. Safe drivers always grip the steering wheel with both hands. The correct defensive driving technique is to securely hold the wheel at the nine and three oíclock positions at all times.

7. Avoid traveling in the ‘blind spot’ of another vehicle. ‘Blind spots’ are a real trap for the unwary. A good rule of thumb to remember when overtaking or following other traffic is ‘if you can’t see their mirrors, they can’t see you!’.

Adopting good defensive driving techniques is like riding a bike. Once learnt and incorporated into your driving routine, they will stand you in good stead for the rest of your life.

And what is the point of acquiring defensive driving techniques? To protect you and your loved ones from trauma and serious injury caused by other irresponsible drivers.

Chevy Cruise Eco – 42MPG? I heard that!

Chevy is turning up the volume on their Super Bowl ad for the Chevy Cruise Eco that gets a reported 42 MPG.  We tested the Cruise last month and found those claims to be spot on.  While the Super Bowl ad pokes fun at believing that a car from Chevy can get 42MPG, it has a charm not unlike the car itself.  We think this commercial, along with those from CarMax, Volkswagen and Acura will be big hits at Super Bowl 46.

CarMax Super Bowl Ad a Blast from the Past

Wouldn’t it be nice if we all received this kind of service with our cars?  That’s what CarMax is trying to tell people and their new Super Bowl ad makes it clear.  Service is their #1 priority.  Looking back at the way gas stations, milk men and every-day life was is a great way to convey to consumers that customer appreciation and friendly service is not dead.  Click below to view the pre-release Super Bowl ad on NFL.com:

Auto Manufacturer Ads Make Headlines Before Super Bowl 46

Auto manufacturers like Volkswagen and General Motors seem to be doing well this year if the social-media chatter among Super Bowl advertisers is any indication.  They have released their commercials early, according to YouGov BrandIndex, a daily consumer research service on brands and the digital world is gobbling them up.

Why Fuel Prices Go Up and Down?

Numerous forces can influence the price of gas at the pump, but fuel costs are only one part in the vast web of global economics. Gas prices have an impact on other parts of the economy as well. There are immediate effects of rising prices – that feeling of stunned disbelief as the numbers climb and climb while you fill your tank. There are secondary effects as well. You might decide against a long road trip because the gas would cost too much. When it comes time to buy a car, you might decide against a gas-guzzling SUV and find something with better mileage instead. Price increases generally occur when the world crude-oil market tightens and lowers inventories. Also, growing demand can sometimes outpace refinery capacity.

Gas prices also vary from state to state for several reasons. Taxes are probably the biggest factor in the different prices around the country. Additionally, competition among local gas stations can drive prices down. Distance from the oil refineries can also affect prices — stations closer to the Gulf of Mexico, where many oil refineries are located, have lower gas prices due to lower transportation costs. There are also some regional factors that can affect prices.

World events, wars and weather can also raise prices. Anything that affects any part of the process, from the moment the oil is drilled, through refining and distribution to your car will result in a change in price. Military conflicts in parts of the world with lots of oil supplies can make it difficult for oil companies to drill and ship crude oil. Hurricanes have damaged offshore drilling platforms, coastal refineries and shipping ports that receive oil tankers. If a tanker itself is lost or damaged, or leaks its oil into the ocean, that will put a dent in the market as well.

In some regions of the country, gasoline is required to meet higher environmental standards in order to reduce the amount of smog created by burning gasoline. Producing this cleaner-burning gasoline can cause problems in refining, distribution and storage, which increases the cost of gas.

fyiAuto recommends buying fuel efficient cars such as the Prius, Leaf and other Hybrids.  If you are looking for something sporty, try the Tesla or the Fisker.
